Open Question: What do you think of my sister's grade 6 essay?

It's my grade 6's sister essay. They had to write about looking at the world as a: "Glass Half Full" If you take a look at the world right now, you might see millions of bad things that are happening throughout it. But the truth is, there are billions of good things happening in the world right now, too. Here's a look at the things worth looking at. The things that make our glass half full. The world is a good place , because , although bad things are indeed happening, there is hope for better. The work, determination, and excitement that's going into fixing these problems, such as the environment, violence, and poverty, is what makes the glass half full. For example: organizations and projects such as:Project (RED), which raises money for improving AIDS/HIV in Africa, and Montreal's own, The Human Promise” which raises awareness of the Darfur Genocide, are excellent examples of the things that will help our world prosper. In terms of looking at the glass half full for our world's environment, not too long ago, the average family would hardly ever recycle, let alone change something like an oil powered heating system to an electric one. Now, the average family definitely recycles, possibly even uses an hybrid car! One thing I did for the environment was to use $54.00 of my allowance to plant trees in Israel. In terms of my life, my friends, and my family, my glass is definitely half full! I am an extremely big worry wart sometimes, which makes me feel like my glass is half empty at times, but when I get through it, I feel like I'm a stronger person afterwards. Another thing that makes my glass half full is that, in every single mistake I make, there is a lesson, a moral, to take from it. Plus, whenever something is wrong, I have my family, my friends, my world to depend on.  more

Resolved Question: If a person already Knows God than why is so important to go through "ceremony" of Knowing Jesus ?

. Was raised by teachings of Presbyterian church...now am simply Spiritual, non-denominational yet still respect all religions, faiths, beliefs. Very much Know the One Light (God) and Jesus Christ. It's said in churchs that it's not enough to Know and believe in the One Light (God) that it's also important to Know and believe in Jesus Christ otherwise you won't be "saved". I do believe in Jesus Christ and honor the teachings shared. Yet, if a person already Knows and believes in the One Light (God), then why is the importance stressed so much by churches that the person also has to proclaim and have "ceremony" to belief in and of Jesus Christ? If a person already Knows God then that connection and relationship is there. That Knowingness of the One Light (God) is aided by teachings of Jesus Christ and teachers I don't quite understand the "being saved only through Jesus Christ" concept when a person already believes and Knows the One Light (God). What is the importance of the "only through Jesus Christ" concept? What's problem with Knowing the One Light and Jesus Christ both, yet still able to have direct connection to the One Light (God) directly? Why does "saving" / cleansing have to be done through Jesus Christ if a person already has Love, awareness and Knowledge of the One Light (God) directly ? Explanations and also any references much appreciated. . . "Tim O'Conner"...I know, Love, believe in and don't reject Jesus Christ. Yet, don't understand the concept of why a person can't preciously deal directly with the One Light (God). Jesus Christ actually being the One Light (God) in human physical form. To Know and Love Jesus is to Know and Love the One LIght (God). So what's problem with honoring Jesus Christ while also dealing directly with the One Light (God) as they're all (God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit) one and the same anyway. Simply, preciously, have different "functions" in relating / communicating with humans ? . . "Ken D." . . . Are'nt "ceremonies" acts of man ? In spiritual realm there are no "ceremonies"...There is simply Knowing, Being, Authentic Pure Love. The One Light (God) already can "read" and Knows our soul, our heart. That Knowledge and connection is of no doubt. So, why would a man created "ceremony" change that what is Known by the One Light (God)? That's, in part, what I don't understand. Direct source, direct Authentic honor, relationship and Love with the One Light (God). God can already know truth in a person's heart. A man created "ceremony" isn't going to make the authentic Love any more true or sincere. . . ..."Joe"....I did read all that you wrote. No judgements. All expressed in your posting was appreciated and valued for what you shared....Yes, the One Light (God) is all and everything. Varied "voices" expressed on varied paths to and of same Light. We are all one. .  more

Resolved Question: Why does breast cancer get more attention than other cancers?

Breast cancer seem more well publicize to general public in particular in well developed countries which I think is great along with HIV aids as the rates of women dying from Breast cancer is alarming. However dont you think its sort of leaving out the men? If men are to be encouraged to see the doctors ( which at times they dont), wouldn't it be nice if there was a national awareness week or day on certain cancers that affect and kill a lot of men such as prostate cancer? We hear of the pink Ribbon Campaign (in Australia) and you see university's, our harbour bridge and Oprea house lighting their lights pink for beast cancer awareness....and there's much more. We never see anything on this scale where there is an awareness for cancer that men suffer such as prostate or Testicular cancer which in effect sends that message out that men should suffer in silence rather than being encouraged to seek help. So are male related cancers discriminated against in terms of the lack of awareness and support by the general public? Some studies find that Cancer affects more men than women. So is the support disproportional?  more

Resolved Question: Who is reporting this legitimate question: What is your reaction to the New York Times editorial about Palin?

September 13, 2008 Editorial Gov. Palin’s Worldview As we watched Sarah Palin on TV the last couple of days, we kept wondering what on earth John McCain was thinking. If he seriously thought this first-term governor — with less than two years in office — was qualified to be president, if necessary, at such a dangerous time, it raises profound questions about his judgment. If the choice was, as we suspect, a tactical move, then it was shockingly irresponsible. It was bad enough that Ms. Palin’s performance in the first televised interviews she has done since she joined the Republican ticket was so visibly scripted and lacking in awareness. What made it so much worse is the strategy for which the Republicans have made Ms. Palin the frontwoman: win the White House not on ideas, but by denigrating experience, judgment and qualifications. The idea that Americans want leaders who have none of those things — who are so blindly certain of what Ms. Palin calls “the mission” that they won’t even pause for reflection — shows a contempt for voters and raises frightening questions about how Mr. McCain and Ms. Palin plan to run this country. One of the many bizarre moments in the questioning by ABC News’s Charles Gibson was when Ms. Palin, the governor of Alaska, excused her lack of international experience by sneering that Americans don’t want “somebody’s big fat résumé maybe that shows decades and decades in that Washington establishment where, yes, they’ve had opportunities to meet heads of state.” We know we were all supposed to think of Joe Biden. But it sure sounded like a good description of Mr. McCain. Those decades of experience earned the Arizona senator the admiration of people in both parties. They are why he was our preferred candidate in the Republican primaries. The interviews made clear why Americans should worry about Ms. Palin’s thin résumé and lack of experience. Consider her befuddlement when Mr. Gibson referred to President Bush’s “doctrine” and her remark about having insight into Russia because she can see it from her state. But that is not what troubled us most about her remarks — and, remember, if they were scripted, that just means that they reflect Mr. McCain’s views all the more closely. Rather, it was the sense that thoughtfulness, knowledge and experience are handicaps for a president in a world populated by Al Qaeda terrorists, a rising China, epidemics of AIDS, poverty and fratricidal war in the developing world and deep economic distress at home. Ms. Palin talked repeatedly about never blinking. When Mr. McCain asked her to run for vice president? “You have to be wired in a way of being so committed to the mission,” she said, that “you can’t blink.” Fighting terrorism? “We must do whatever it takes, and we must not blink, Charlie, in making those tough decisions of where we go and even who we target.” Her answers about why she had told her church that President Bush’s failed policy in Iraq was “God’s plan” did nothing to dispel our concerns about her confusion between faith and policy. Her claim that she was quoting a completely unrelated comment by Lincoln was absurd. This nation has suffered through eight years of an ill-prepared and unblinkingly obstinate president. One who didn’t pause to think before he started a disastrous war of choice in Iraq. One who blithely looked the other way as the Taliban and Al Qaeda regrouped in Afghanistan. One who obstinately cut taxes and undercut all efforts at regulation, unleashing today’s profound economic crisis. In a dangerous world, Americans need a president who knows that real strength requires serious thought and preparation. EDIT: No Cherry Pop Tart, a rant is a "A wild, incoherent, emotional articulation; An exposition written, or more often oral, where emotionality supersedes rationality. Its purpose is a call to action, often identifying a target for ire and a path to resolution." I asked you to respond to an editorial from a very reputable newspaper. EDIT: Claudiacake: Yes, everyone has opinions but they are valid only to the extent that they are based on facts. It is arbitrary to say otherwise. maddog_1: Actually, Obama is very experienced and is responsible for much legislation as a U.S. Senator for four years and a State Senator for eight. He also accomplished great things as a community organizer: helping set up a job training program, a college preparatory tutoring program, and a tenants' rights organization. And of course, he taught constitutional law for twelve years and was editor of the Harvard Law Review. It is entirely necessary to discuss Sarah Palin since she will be next in line to the presidency and since McCain is elderly and in ill health.  more

Resolved Question: What are my chances of getting in to Phillips Andover/Exeter?

If your familiar with Urban Word in NYC, the group will be tied with their philosophies Teacher rec's should be pretty good, I get along very well with all my teachers. Interview will hopefully go pretty well too, I'm good with people. As far as my classes go I feel a little intimidated on this board. I'm in Algebra 1 as a freshman , and our school doesn't offer freshman any AP's. I am however in 3 Level 1 classes, not sure how that will compare to prep schools though. Resolved Question: Would you be more likely to donate to Cancer Research or Domestic Violence?

I'm planning a sky dive in aid of charity next spring. I usually hold events that are for Cancer Research, but I want to do domestic violence. I was affected by it myself, and know a lot of women (and one or two men)that have been victims to so its something clsoe to my heart. But a lot of people have stigma against DV, so am worried about not raising enough. Also Cancer affects so many, I'm more liekly to get better awareness. OR do you think I should raise for both, and hope that people see the urgency? Thanks for you answers... I'm not thinking about which one will make me look good, I couldnt care less about how I look! Lol. But for this particular event I need to raise a certain amount by a certain time, that way they will not charge me. Meaning I can donate what I was paying for the dive to the charity. I also am not sure if I can do it for both with the methd I am using...so will have to look into doing others...pfft.  more

Resolved Question: Do I qualify for the Peace Corps with certain legal issues in my past?

Dating back to my younger years, I have dreamt of having the privilege of joining the Peace Corps. I shall be a graduate in June 2009 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Speech Pathology and Audiology. Other Qualifications: * Having spent two years assisting and observing in a Communication Disorders clinic. * I have been a part of a community service organization for the past five years, having held the position of Vice President and head of Community Service Activities. During this time I have organized and been the leader of HIV/Aids awareness projects, organized conferences regarding women's health issues(breast/cervical cancer), and donating to various women's shelters. * I am CPR certified. * I have spent six summers working closely with ESL students. Assisting them with their group/school projects and putting together math, reading, and writing workbooks. * I am not fluent in Spanish, but have been raised in a Spanish speaking household, as well as having two years of Spanish classes under my belt. My problem? Two and a half years ago I made the dumbest decision I've ever made. I went and received a reckless driving charge. I regret this with all my heart and soul, wishing everday I could just take it back. However, I truly believe that my past mistake and ignorant decision has helped me to make wiser decisions today, and that I have learned from it. I realize that Reckless Driving doesn't count as a felony, and on the Peace Corps Application it said that one year must pass in order for one to be considered (almost three years has past). I suppose my question is this: Taking the qualifications listed above into account, what are my chances of still being accepted into the Peace Corps Program? I truly appreciate all of your help! THANK YOU!!!  more

Resolved Question: Can I be a feminist if I'm also a masculist?

I'm not an anti-feminist, since I support the basic tenants of feminism: "The doctrine advocating social, political, and all other rights of women equal to those of men." - dictionary.com. However I disagree with a lot of feminist scholars, the PC thought police in charge of despicable organizations such as NOW, the ludicrous sexist "patriarchy conspiracy theory", socialist feminism, marxist feminism, anti-family/misandrist diatribe, archaic constructionist sociological belief systems intertwined with feminist theory, gynocentrism, apathy towards male victims etc.... This is a not another stupid conservative rant, I'm a centrist libertarian, I just oppose radicals and slimeballs on both sides of the spectrum. At the same time I support the fight to end: - Female discrimination - Violence against women - Depiction of women/girls in the media - Female rape - Equal opportunities - Treatment of women in the Middle East - Reproductive and abortion rights - Sexual harassment, voting, education - "Equal pay for equal work" - Affordable childcare - Affordable health care I also actively support men’s rights in areas such as: - Family court bias - Alimony bias - Paternity fraud - Increasing suicide rate among men - Child custody bias - Parental rights bias - Bias in health concern awareness - Incarceration for not paying child support - Lack of advocacy for men’s rights - Special government agencies for women's affairs with no corresponding agencies for men's affairs - Biased rape shield laws - Lack of educational aid for boys and men - Justice system bias - Statutory rape bias - Men’s higher premiums for auto, health, life and disability insurance - Depiction of men in the media Can I be both a feminist and a masculist? Gaspari: I'm impressed by your medical knowledge, maybe you use it health/human biology sections. However you're arguments on what constitutes the basic ideogy of feminism are paranoid and sensationalist. There the kind of stuff that polarizes feminists and masculists, and stops us from contributing together. Sangre: thank you, as a western taoist I try to remain humble and wise.  more

Resolved Question: Live Aid & Live Earth: Making a difference or just making R&P stars look good?

Well, there's no doubt benefit concerts like these sparked awareness for their cause at the time, and were originally created for a noble cause. They have produced some fantastic performances, given artists the chance to support the causes (incidentally in front of millions of viewers) and made the public totally hyped about helping the horrific poverty situation and using solar panels etc. A few years on however, alot of the people who were hyped before have got busy with their lives and moved on. Of course I'm not suggesting these concerts are supposed to solve the world's problems, but have people really taken their messages on board, influenced by the fact their favourite band have supported them, and tried themselves to make a difference? Do benefit concerts actually make some sort of a difference, or are their messages quickly forgotten? Do performers really appear at them to try and urge their fans to take action? ...or are they merely a tool artists take advantage of to appear caring and appealling to fans, in hope of a few more tickets sold to their next show? Opinions? I realise it's a bit of a long question, but currently I have nothing better to do than think about stuff like this, lol. No rudeness required either, I'm just looking for some intellegent viewpoints from people who are older and wiser than I am. =)  more

We have a moral obligation to the people of the world to stop HIV by awareness and education 2. It is immoral and irresponsible to spread HIV to “innocents” (by those aware of their affliction). 3. Resolved Question: So is this a new Olympic event?

Beijing Provides 100,000 Condoms For Athletes BEIJING (Reuters) - The Sydney Olympics ran out. Athens doubled the number. So organisers of the Beijing Games are hoping 100,000 condoms will satisfy the needs of Olympic athletes. While sex is not an Olympic sport it is expected to be an activity in the Beijing village housing 10,500 athletes, all of whom are in great shape and with plenty of free time on their hands once knocked out of the Games. Athletes have received free condoms at every Olympics since Barcelona in 1992 to help raise awareness of AIDS, and Beijing is no exception. "There are many young, strong, single people in the athletes' village and, like everywhere, some will fall in love or other things so we need to make condoms available," Ole Hansen, spokesman for UNAIDS China, told Reuters. "A lot of these young people are not married or in relationships so we want to make sure they have the information and tools to protect themselves if they have sexual encounters." The UNAIDS, the Beijing organising committee BOCOG and International Olympics Committee are providing 100,000 condoms as part of a campaign on HIV prevention and anti-discrimination. http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080812/od_uk_nm/oukoe_uk_olympics_condoms;_ylt=AuKcxH2QHkc_em.UeGDNQkvtiBIF  more

Resolved Question: So why do people keep calling The Jonas Brothers "The New Hanson"?

Pretty much, the only thing similar, is that they are bands of 3 brothers, who had obsessive little girl fans. But the jonas brothers are 15, 18, and 20, and their music sounds like they are whiny 13 year olds. When Hanson was big, they were 16, 14, and 11, so they only sounded bad, because they didnt hit puperty, and they were much younger. The Jonas Brothers dont even seem to care about their fans, or they would have free meet and greets before shows. Hanson, does a "walk" before every show, to help raise money/awareness for AIDS. Sure, the jonas brothers donate money to diabetes, but if nick didnt have diabetes, they wouldnt give a damn. What I am trying to get to, is why is the jonas brothers "the new hanson"? they are all married, with kids. Hey Crazed JB fan, you wernt even born when hanson was big. so "suck that hater"  more

I have a friend who is wanting to do a painting in blood for a school project meant for AIDS awareness. Obviously the school isn't letting him use his actual blood, but I was wondering if there are any artists out there that know of a paint or mixture that will dry to look like dried blood. I really want to help him with this! Please and thank you!  more

Prepare a pocket guide on First Aid for your school. The content shared in the guide should be supported with adequate pictures so as to give a clear and elaborate understanding about the topic. Resolved Question: Applying Early Decision With Spelman College??

I was wondering if I applied Early Decision for Fall 2009 would I have a better chance of getting in??? My gpa is a 3.0, my ACT is a 20, but I have TONS of volunteer hours, (I DO plan to retake the ACT) I have even started my own club at my high school, I'm really involved with AIDS awareness,I have kept a part time job for a year and have had a summer internship with the Metropolitian Transportation Commission. The reason for my low gpa is because I had a condition that left me partially paralyzed therefore missing quite a bit of school for a period of time. I did fail a few classes in high school, but I have made them all up with better grades. So do I have even half a shot for spelman college?? I would really like to go there!! Thanks!! Please be honest, it wont hurt my feelings!!  more

Resolved Question: ADVICE ON HARVARD or other ivy league Schools???

Hi, I'm going to be a high school junior for the 08-09 school year. I want to know if what I've done in school so far is going to help me stand out for applying to an ivy league school. I have straight A's in these courses (those are all the classes I have taken so far) and in most I received 99's or 100's. Honors English I & II Honors Algebra I (in middle school) & II Honors Geometry Honors Pre-Calculus Honors Biology I Honors Chemistry I Honors World History Honors Civics & Economics Foods I Computer Applications Health/PE (required) Theater Arts I Spanish I & II I'm in these clubs: Spanish Club Key Club The Round Table (high school newspaper) TACT-- Teens Against Consuming Tobacco Film Club I’m in a special program run by Mercy Corps. -- Global Citizen Corps. They do a lot of work and fundraising for HIV/AIDS, world hunger awareness, and global poverty. But I took the SAT I reasoning test and didn’t do so great… I got a 1600/2400... And on the PSAT I got 157* I have a LOT of volunteering hours and tutoring hours, I work at the local hospital, and I completed a program at UNC- Chapel Hill for students who plan to go into a medical profession… So do you think I’m on the right track for Ivy League Schools? I want to teach kids, counsel people, raise awareness for HIV/AIDS, go on Missionaries, promote World Peace, and help take care of the sick. Most of my life im going to spend my time in the poor trying to help them. This world is too chaotic to sit in front of a desk typing reports for a career.  more

Resolved Question: Anyone from Africa?

I am not quite sure how to ask this question. My husband and I recently chose to sponsor two children, one in Kenya and one in Mozambique. We are working with the organization to raise money, and we are training to run the Chicago Marathon to raise money and awareness of children affected by HIV and AIDS in Africa, and we have been researching child soldiers in Sudan. I guess what I want to know is, how do people in Africa feel about this? Do you feel that accepting this type of help is compromising your own culture? Do you feel that other countries do not have a realistic view of your continent? I want my girl in Kenya to have an improved life, that does not mean I want my values and beliefs pushed on her. If you are in Africa, what are your views of the US and the attention you get from the (red) campaign and the oraganizations dedicated to helping. I don't want to do this because it makes me feel good, or because I want to look good, I just want to make a life easier. Is there pressure to embrace a culture that is not your own?  more

Resolved Question: Is hollywood selfish?

How often do Hollywood celebrities donate money to help the issues that this world faces...From poverty, to aids awareness, to diseases, to cancer patients...How often do Hollywood celebrities help out? They have so much money that they could clearly make a difference....But they don't seem to do anything...or do they? In India, the bollywood celebrities donate millions of dollars...Shahrukh Khan just donated 16 million to build shelters for the poor. Aishwarya donated 6 million for education regarding aids awareness( Last Week)...A producer by the name of Yash Raj donated 32 million (over a span of couple years) for various issues. They all donate money because they have enough to make a differance... Shouldn't hollywood celebs do the same?  more

Resolved Question: I get recurring MRSA staph infections. Looking for more answers.?

I just started getting them 1 day in 2004 & have been since. I get 15-20 a month. The doctors say I have Paritial Specific Antibody Deficiency & have been in & out of the hosptal to get IV meds. I can't find anything on the internet. Dr. Phil had a show about this March 08.Even he said there isn't enough community awareness and it has killed more people then AIDS.The infections are PAINFUL when I get them & I get very tired & don't feel good & am just so tired of feeling like this. There are only 2 medications that work for this type of infection & I take them monthly & could get immuned to them,if I do then there aren't any other meds that will help me,then it can be fatal per the doctors. The meds also make me very sick to my stomach and is hard to function like this. Does anyone else have this problem or know anything about it? The doctors can't tell me anymore because they don't know anymore. I'm thinking someone has to have more answers out there.  more

Resolved Question: Is this proposal I made good??? It is to create a high school club concerning animals????

Animal Allies Purpose: Although ____ High School has created many successful clubs that appeal to students, there lacks a club that involves aiding animals. Animals face devastating overpopulation and the student body should be informed of how to help bring it to an end. With animals being such a big part of people’s lives, it is time to give back to animals and help find caring homes for them. This club can also fundraise and then provide money and supplies to local animals shelters. Animal Allies would be a club that teaches students how to care for animals and educate them on issues dealing with animals such as animal cruelty and fighting fur. Goals: -Assist homeless animals find loving homes. -Support a local animal organization that helps homeless pets such as directly volunteering at the shelter or adoption shows, organizing a supply collection, or holding a fund-raiser. -Create awareness to stop overpopulation of cats and dogs, animal cruelty, and fur production Location: In Mrs. Smiths' room every other Friday during lunch conducted by founder, Jane Doe.  more
