Wachovia, based in North Carolina and with branch banks in Connecticut and New York, was eaten for breakfast by Citigroup.
It was a victim of heavy exposure to the mortgage crisis, and federal regulators had been helping Wachovia look for a deal that would help depositors. They got it, but shareholders and probably many employees will be the losers.
In the Southeast, drivers were rising before dawn to wait in line to fill their tanks because of a gasoline shortage. The shortage is officially attributed to a shutdown of refineries by hurricanes Gustav and Ike, but the shortage is feeding other anxieties about the state of the nation.
"There is no gasoline in Atlanta, in Charlotte, in Chattanooga," said former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who was in Atlanta over the weekend. more

My buddy Lou Testoni, originally camping tonight, decided a bed and breakfast was more his style. I can't give him too much grief, since I'm planning to stay in a hotel in Cumberland, Md., on Wednesday.
Today it's up the trail another 50 miles to Fort Frederick, Md. Some of us are going to take a side trip to Antietam Battlefield. More to come about that on Tuesday.
This whole deal is really cool. I am really proud to be a part of this trip and already know that this experience will be a memory of a lifetime. Since I am lucky enough to be riding the commemorative Pittsburgh 250 Black and Gold Bike, I feel like I'm riding for all the Pittsburghers who wish they could be here.
