Brownies need new leaders

WERE you a Brownie or a Guide, or do you have a Guiding leadership qualification or just like working with young children?.

If so, please read on, because the Malvern and Upton Division are desperate for new Guiders.

A Brownie pack that meets every Tuesday in the centre of Malvern will have to close at Christmas if a adult leader does not come forward.

You will not have to run the unit single handed as there is a rota of parents and young leader help.

If you would like to know more, contact division dommissioner Trish Robinson on Ipirobinson@aol.com, or Maureen Andrews on mcandrews@qinetiq.com (Assistant Brownie Guider 1st Malvern Link).

Now Answers to Gourmet Fruit Questions

Resolved Question: How often should I be feeding my hamster?

My hamster Cujo stows his food away which I know is normal but when do re-fill his bowl? He eats the Gourmet diet with banana, apple, and other dry fruits and grains. Also, he was fully grown when I got him. How long should he live? I've had him almost a year. He's a Siberian Hamster (I think). This is him saying hi to my cat. He has new cage so that wire grate on the bottom is gone now. http://www.flickr.com/photos/catsnkits/2238929459/in/set-72157603842323972/  more

Resolved Question: How do we make sure our guests stay fed?

The fiance and I are paying for our own wedding to happen in July of 2009. Per our budget, we can only afford appetizers for our reception. We're planning a 1:00-1:30 ceremony with a 1:30-7pm reception. However, when we went to see a caterer, she worried we wouldn't have enough food. Now, this could be her way of getting us to spend more money on more food, but I wanted to get your opinion. Here's our menu so far: -fresh fruit display -crackers and gourmet cheese -raw veggies display -miniature beef wellingtons -water and sweet/unsweet iced tea A thought my fiance and i had was to find a way to take a few hundred more dollars from other parts of the wedding and add on two more hot apps. Another thing I thought we could do was to push the ceremony back until 1:30, thereby allowing guests the time to eat lunch before arriving. If the ceremony starts then, they wouldn't start arriving until 1:00 or 1:15, giving them a good while to eat lunch. I was also thinking of putting "H'ors Doeuvres only reception" to hint to people that they should eat lunch before coming. What do you guys thing? Does the menu seem sufficient? If not, do you think adding a couple more appetizers and pushing the ceremony back would be good solutions? Yes, we are having a buffet. Neither of us is a culinary master. We can barely make dinner for the two of us, let alone nearly 50 people. Also, our reception site and ceremony site are literally right next door. In the same building, in fact. That's why there's no gap. We actually are having a beer and wine bar, so there will be plenty of "interesting" things to drink.  more

Resolved Question: What should I cook my friends for dinner?

I have some VIP's coming over for dinner today (the mayor and a business associate) and I want to cook something that will really impress them and make them like me. I have a few meal ideas that I need help narrowing down to 2. Horsehoof casserole: Its a Peruvian dish that includes deep fried horse hooves, tomato sause, diced greens, and sometimes paprika. Cremdola: Fried diced camel eyes with choice of side. Salmon with Lemon and Dill: Salmon cooked with lemon juice and black pepper. Gourmet "Macoroni and Cheese": A special recipe my mom can make with 3 different kinds of cheese and Italian Bouchet penne pasta. Acorn shavings are then sprinkled on top. Antler delight: A Norwegian dish that consists of chopped up male deer antlers, usually served with fresh salad and fruit. Tell me which one you think is best! Resolved Question: No more fruitcakes please! What would you do??

Does anyone actually love fruitcake anymore? Or is it a thing of past generations, like when tangerines and walnuts in the children's stockings were a real treat, since fresh fruit in winter was a rarity? I know they were quite popular back when people couldn't get all types of fruits & veggies at any time of year like you can today, so candied fruit was a way to preserve it. But honestly, who hasn't heard the joke that there's really only one fruitcake in the world & it just keeps getting mailed around? I for one, know that's not true, because my family receives one every year...but none of us eats the stuff! They are sent from a beloved aunt who adores it and I guess figures everyone must, and of course we don't have the heart to tell her we don't. Don't get me wrong - these are beautiful, expensive gourmet cakes, probably around $40 + shipping. Such a waste... We don't even know anyone who likes them anymore to re-gift them to. So, does anyone still eat these things? It always arrived early enough that I would add it into our gift package to my mother-in-law who appreciated them, but now she's gone. (My aunt's around 80 yrs., so same generation.) Once I discovered 3 of them in the back of the freezer, I started feeding them to the squirrels over the winter months. They and the bluejays seem to enjoy them very much :) Now I'm wondering if I can't be the only one in this boat -- is there maybe a fruitcake recycling center somewhere?  more

Resolved Question: help me to correct this paragrph?

Restaurant Review Restaurant reviews help people choose restaurants . They tell the reader about the food, prices, location ,service. therfore I write two restaurant review , one for student newspaper and one for magazine for gourmet cooks . "the Roses" is a great restaurant for student and "The stinking Rose" restaurant for gourmet cooks. So You can check the best and worst restaurants in your city. "The Roses" restaurant is informal and old-fashioned . The service was not good . There are two dining rooms full of too many people, for example you have to wait a long time for your food because the waiters are not fast . The food is Italian and all the dishes are made with garlic. And the meal was not served properly and it was not delicious, Such as the chicken was not cooked well, the soup is cold and the fruits are not fresh. Prices are reasonable. Appetizers are from $ 6.00 to $ 9.00 Entrées are from $10,50 to $ 15,00 . On the contrary , "The stinking Rose" restaurant is fancy and trendy .They are decorated with many pictures and the music accompanies dinner. The service are excellent but, you have to reserve in advance .for example ,you can not make your order on the phone, you have to come. The chef has worked at many famous restaurants also, waiters are very friendly and fast. The food is expensive . Appetizers are from $ 30.00 t o$ 70.00 Entrées are from $ 500,50 to $ 700,00 . They serve a lot of delicious seafood for dessert, you can order seafood ice cream !. Lots of all In my eyes I think that restaurants reviews are very impotent to help people choose restaurants. You can also check the best and worst in your city. It's like a service that lets you track all new restaurants and hygiene inspection ratings for all restaurants. i am a student. i would like to improve my english writing  more

Resolved Question: PTA vs. PTO?

For those of you who have chosen a PTO over a PTA for your school, how do you like it? We have a PTA. We have a great board and we work together really well. Even the ones who'll be board members in the coming years are SMASHING! We hate giving half our money away to the National PTA. We hate how we're being treated by the district PTA Board. I hate that they (the district PTA) wants me to attend meetings that have no purpose. 50% of the time there's no information to give me. 50% of the time, the info could have been written on a 3X3 post it note. But they have gourmet breakfast tacos, Starbucks coffee and tons of fresh fruit. And for lunch they cater it to the hilt - all on money that parents give that COULD be going to enrich the school. I don't need to attend meaningless meetings to feel important. I'd rather be doing something at the school. Our biggest concern is Liability insurance? We get great rates through Nation PTA. Resolved Question: Picnic Style Party Food for my two yr old?

I'm taking my daughter's birthday to the park this year; and setting up a table and marquee style thing there. She's only two, and we'll probably have about 15 or so people, including four 2 yr olds, a couple of 6 yr olds and parents. I'm looking for suggestions for foods I can serve that doesn't need to be heated. Obviously I'm thinking of doing finger sandwiches (filling suggestions would certainly be appreciated) but I am completely drawing a blank on everything else, except maybe a fruit platter. All the decorations with be Dorothy the Dinosaur themed, but I'm pretty much happy to serve any simple fare; kids are fussy, so gourmet recipes probably wont do it! :) Any suggestions? Thanks everyone for all the advice - I will stay away from peanut butter - just to be safe - cos we have some pretty little kids coming and I'd like to avoid those kinds of reactions. I'm going to do jam sandwiches cut into shapes though - what a clever idea, and the celery sticks, etc. Thought I'd add some mini quiches too - darn but it's gonna be like 40 degrees, stinkin' hot! I'll stay away from sushi - cooked or raw, just cos of the heat... don't want manky meat on the pary table :)  more

Resolved Question: Got a quick "gourmet" menu idea for 4 adults that is affordable, shop-able and cook-able in 4 hours?

All 4 of us are "well above average" cooks/chefs/bakers, and we all have an excellent supply of cooking/baking/grilling appliances, specialty pans/tools/utensils/serviceware, herbs/spices, and fresh/frozen/dry/canned staples. I also have fairly quick shopping access to a varied supply of routine or gourmet fresh/frozen/other staples/meats/veggies/fruits. I'm in Florida and the weather is mild today. I would like to try something new that doesn't keep me away from my guests too long...or that is "fun" for the 4 of us to prepare and serve together. I don't have a fortune to spend, so please think "novelty and skill" over cost! I'm looking for the quick answers, of course, but I realize that I have just asked a question that might interest me or other cooks at any time.. so I promise that I will honestly try to acknowlede all answers and choose and rate the best one! Thank you for your menu ideas and Bless YOU!!! thpa, I have to love your answer as my brother and I are Italian and you just answered with our favorite "standard" and, hence, it is also our favorite "standby"! Please, feel free to keep editing your response. Thank you and Bless YOU!!! sarahz, you are also on the right wavelength! Resolved Question: Your critic review on my recipe #1?

Hello everyone, I'm 13 years old and am already planning my future to be a pro-chef! I am already working towards my many recipes of which will be placed in a book you will see in stores being mass produced 20 years from now! My recipes are not chocolate chip cookies, or eggs. I take my recipes quite seriously, and I try to make very intricate, beautiful gourmet foods. Although, I like to make sensible healthy dishes from the gourmet culinary arts, to the basic home cooking. Here is my first recipe: Name: Chicken VS Fruit Description: I take 1/4 cup of olive oil, and 1/3 cup red wine vinager, just a little paprika, some garlic salt, and quite a bit of chopped basil leaves. Next put that all in a plastic baggie, and mix it up a bit. Then put your chicken breast in there, and let it marinade in the baggie for about 15 minutes. Cook it on the stove till brown. Put it on top graham cracker with a slice of watermelon and grapes! Calories: About 150. Filling?: YES! Now comment!  more

Resolved Question: Vegetarian cooking on a major budget?

I'm looking for some good veggie recipies. To narrow it down a bit... I don't like hummus. And I use dairy products. And I can't afford those exotic obscure products. I've been eating meat for quite awhile, because of my anti-herbivore husband; but I've been missing my old vegetarian cooking. The food just tastes so much better. My husband will eat veggie food, but only if he's got a side of meat for himself. I want my son to be open to vegetarianism. He's a year old and obviously prefers veggies and fruit to meat. Anything I could cook for him and me, and then make my husband a chicken breast on the side or something, would be great. I'm looking for home cooking, not gourmet.  more

Resolved Question: My boyfriend and I want to have a small picnic with wine, cheese, bread, fruit. What's the best wine for this?

He keeps insisting on some meat. so that may be involved. For "dessert", we may have a few shortbread cookies (biscuits). What's the best wine and cheese? I don't want cheddar, swiss, monteray jack, or any other same old same cheeses. Maybe something gourmet, but nothing too expenisive...or stinky. =) White to yellow cheeses, please. I was thinking Riesling, but that may be 'too' sweet since we'll be having fruit and cookies (biscuits). Any suggestions? Thank you! I'd prefer a hard or semi-hard cheese, please. Nothing like Brie, and I'm not quite sure about Havarti, although I have considered it for this occasion. =)  more

Resolved Question: I need advice on converting my birds diet from seed to pellets?

NIKKI is a little green cheeked conure. She came into our life about a month ago and she was on a steady diet of Hartz Bonanza Gourmet blend for cockatiels and small hook bills. We read that conures should be on a diet of predominantly pellets with seeds for treats. So we bought her Zupreem Avaian Maintenance Fruit flavor blend for parrots and conures. But, she just searches through the dish for the good stuff (seeds) which isn't there so she just flings the pellets around. (she's not eating them) Should we mix seeds in with the pellets or wait her out until she gets hungry enough to eat the pellets? Also, she likes banana chips and brocoli and nectarines but she wont really even try anything else  more

Resolved Question: my rabbit's keeps pooing watery poo.?

My rabbit keeps pooing and its not the normal round and hard kind, its very liquidy and it smudges and smears across the floor of his cage should he step on it. He does this repeatedly and its getting his paws all dirty! I haven't been giving him any 'gourmet pet food' or any treats such as fruits/vegetables. I've just been giving him all pellets and a bit of timothy hay. Can someone tell me what's wrong with him? Is this diaahrea? Its very annoying to clean and extremely messy. please help!  more

Resolved Question: Can anyone help me with this diet im trying, i want to know if its going to work?!?!?

Let me start off saying i need to lose a lot of weight, at least 100lbs. Its hard for me to eat a little bit at a time. So.. for breakfast i eat 2 bowls of Special K, then i do the same for lunch. Then for dinner i eat a lean gourmet meal, and orange, a kiwi, and other fruits. Then for any snacks in between i have special K. All i drink is water, and with my special k i drink fat free milk. There are calories in special K, but no calories from fat. All i want to know is am i hurting my body with all of this cereal? I also walk about 3-5 hours a day. I burn lots of calories doing so. Any tips i would appreciate it! Thank you!!  more

Resolved Question: I thought I'd add some like 'fun-ness' to this sections, I'll just post one joke thought so I don't...?

take away from people actually answering REAL questions. So people, after you read this go answer their questions! Joke I found on a website: NO OFFENSE TO ANYONE What a drag it is getting old... When I went to the bar tonight, I noticed this old boy about 75-80 years sitting all alone in the corner and he was crying over his cocktail. I stopped and asked him what was wrong. He said: "I have a 22 year old lover at home. I met him a month or so ago, right here in this very bar!" He continued; "He makes love to me every morning and then he makes me pancakes, sausage, fresh fruit and freshly ground, brewed coffee." I said: "Well, then why are you crying?" He said: "He makes me homemade soup for lunch and my favorite brownies and then he makes love to me half the afternoon." I said: "Well, so why are you crying?" He said: "For dinner he makes me a gourmet meal with wine and my favorite dessert and then he makes love to me until 2:00 am." I said: "Well for goodness sakes! Why in the world would you be CRYING!" And he said: "I CAN'T REMEMBER WHERE I LIVE!" If you guys like it I can keep posting a couple jokes but I don't want to make anyone mad for posting in the wrong sections... tell me what you think. Heres another one too: A woman's husband had been slipping in and out of a coma for several months, yet she stayed by his bedside every single day. When he came to, he motioned for her to come nearer. As she sat by him, he said, "You know what? You have been with me all through the bad times. When I got fired, you were there to support me. When my business failed, you were there. When I got shot, you were by my side. When we lost the house, you gave me support. When my health started failing, you were still by my side... You know what?" "What dear?" She asked gently. "I think you bring me bad luck."  more

Resolved Question: Top Loin Boneless Pork Chops - favorite recipes????

I've thawed out 2.5 lbs of these lovely chops. I'm sort of bored and would like to make something different. I am a very good cook and have a well stocked kitchen. I'm certain that I have 90% of the gourmet herbs and spices that can be purchased at a fine grocer or grown in my Florida garden. I have a good supply of all the standard fresh veggies, greens, tomatoes, potatoes, fruit, etc. including a nice head of green cabbage and a large rutaba. I have plenty of frozen and canned goods (including an enormous assortment of beans). I have a large assortment of kitchen tools and appliances. Please send me your recipes and/or meal suggestions - no matter how simple or complicated. This family likes ALL types of food - homey or fancy. So, just tell me what your favorites are and give me some inspiration please. Thank You and Bless You All!!!  more

Brownies and cubs go animal crackers

Hundreds of brownies and cubs from across the country descended on Dudley Zoo at the weekend.

More than 1,600 youngsters joined a wide range of activities at the site throughout the two-day animal extravaganza.

CEO, Peter Suddock, said: "The Discovery Days form part of the Friends to the animals badge for brownies and animal carer badge for cubs.

"When we originally promoted the idea it was as a single day event, but we had so many inquiries that we have had to put on an additional day.

"It was a very busy weekend.

"Thankfully, the weather was fantastic throughout the weekend and everyone had a wonderful time."

More than 900 Brownies were on to the site on Saturday (September 20), followed by a further four hundred on Sunday (September 21), alongside three hundred cubs. more
