Celebrating bank's birthday is a piece of cake

A century of banking in Hillsborough was celebrated at NatWest with a giant cake for customers and staff.Sheffield Wednesday star Jermaine Johnson did the honours by cutting the cake, and visitors learned more about the origins of their local branch which began life as the Sheffield Banking Company in 1908.Originally located in a block of shops on the corner of Middlewood Road and Wadsley Lane, the branch was part of the thriving new community in Hillsborough which had been boosted by the opening of Hillsborough Park and Sheffield Wednesday Football Club.In 1919 the company was bought by one of the emerging high street banks, later known as National Provincial Bank. The Second World War brought with it staff shortages and lending controls, but by the fifties business in Hillsborough was flourishing – with nearly 850 accounts by 1960.In 1970 it merged with Westminster Bank to create NatWest, with the current branch a consolidation of its two offices which took place in 1996.Jane Dyson, branch manager at Hillsborough, said everyone had enjoyed their birthday celebrations.She said: "We had a fantastic day. more
