Starting today retailers must tell consumers which countries certain food come from, including beef, pork, chicken, lamb, goat, veal, wild and farm-raised seafood, fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables, peanuts, pecans, macadamia nuts and ginseng. (See the September 13 story from the Tribune's Stephen J. Hedges for more information.)
It's called "Country of Origin Labeling" or COOL. Of course, there are loopholes. "Processed" foods are exempt, including bags of frozen mixed vegetables, bags of salad that contains lettuce and dressing, fruit cups with assorted fruit, roasted peanuts and even Spam. The law affects grocery stores and supermarkets. Butchers are exempt.
Also not covered by the law are restaurants, cafeterias, food stands, bars and other food service operations, including in-store salad bars and delis providing ready-to-eat food, according to the U.S. more
