Undernews For October 4, 2008

Richard C Cook, Global Research - We know that the debacle started with homeowner defaults on subprime mortgages and that it has now spread to other types of mortgages. We know that the unhealthy use of subprime mortgages started during the Clinton administration, as did the bundling and sale of these mortgages into mortgage-backed securities sold in the financial markets.

What has not been reported is that the Bush administration turned these acts of reckless lending into a national program of mortgage fraud. Soon after George W. Bush became president in 2001, meetings at the White House between Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan and administration officials became more frequent. According to mortgage industry insiders I have interviewed, direction soon began to come down from the banks to mortgage brokers to falsify borrower income information to allow them to qualify for loans that were otherwise out of reach. more

Voting Question: Which foods are the worst to dip in Canadian maple syrup?

Of these so-called international cuisines: 1) Spaghetti and fetuccini and chicken alfredo with garlic bread, all simmering in maple syrup. 2) Soulvaki on a pita bread with hummus and greek salad, with a shawarma from Ottawa's famous Shawarma Palace, with baklava, (drowned into a pool of maple syrup.) 3) Mexican tacoes and burritoes and fajita and sour cream and spanish rice and doritoes and salsa and baked beans, spiked with maple syrup. 4) Chinese spring rolls with shrimp fried rice and egg drop soup and Mongolian beef and Thai pumpkin curry and a Japanese miso soup with a full 20-ounch bottle of maple syrup poured into the dish. 5) French poultry with New Orleans spicy cajun chicken wings with poutine with a Montreal-style bagel and 4 gallons of maple syrup mixed with vodka. Which would taste the crappiest? to #3 we will add in a cuban-pressed sandwich also. (We are fusing some of our international cuisines based on region.) Not to say Cubans and Mexicans are the same, or Japanese and Thai are the same, or Parisians and Quebecois are the same, or all Middle Eastern food is Greek, just a little fusion. OR 6) Hungarian Gloulash with German Frankfurters and Polish sausage on a plate with Viennese Weinerschitzel, with maple syrup There's too many others to name. You can do Ethiopian, Polynesian, Brazilian, California produce, Sea Food (too similar to Canadian domestic), Fast Food, etc. Whoops, Indian Food also.  more

Open Question: R&B SINGER JOE'S BETJ URBAN CUISINE APPEARANCE?

Do anyone know if R&B singer JOE has appeared on BETJ's Urban Cuisine with celebrity chef Marcus Samuelson?? Do anyone know WHEN he will be on there? I went on the BETJ website and it shows him in the kitchen with chef but I'm furious to hope that I did not MISS HIM!! I have my Time Warner DVR cable box set to record the show so hopefully I DID NOT miss him and should be able to catch any reruns or new ones. I'm a BAD a** cook in the kitchen so I'd love to be beside chef Samuelson & my husband (JOE) for that fact to cook up a few things. I CAN THO DOWN. I really can. Soul food, italian, mexican, chinese, american; whatever; I can do it all. I almost lost it when I saw him on BETJ's front page. I LOVE JOE so so so much and it's so important that I see my baby. I CANNOT WAIT TO SEE HIM. ;) Thanks.  more

Open Question: Why do vegans either get annoyed by meat-eaters or feel like they have to push their plant-eating?

I'm a meat-eater by choice. I have been my whole life. I would never look down on someone for their own lifestyle choices, or try to force them to eat chicken. Really, there's no need to explain my reasons if asked, I don't care either way so theres a fabulous sense of apathy towards what others think about my cuisine choices. My question is, why is it that every time someone converts to veganism they either get extremely annoyed with it and try to argue the value of being vegan or try to explain their own plant-eating habits, (i.e., "Bee's are people too...blah, blah, blah.) I don't think I've once come across a person who will just say, "Oh, that's nice." or "Oh, then can I order you chinese instead?" type of accept-it-and-drop-it type of answer. I want to know why vegans are so threatened by meat eaters??? I guess I just don't get the whole psychological bigotry behind it and it's kind of driving me crazy. Any vegetarian or meat-eaters answers to this question are welcome.  more

Resolved Question: Why do mostly Asian countries eat odd stuff?

From Japan to China, countries in Asian eat weird things.for example,in Thailand they raise rats for food consumption and Vietnam also do the same.Cambodia is another Asian country that eat certain kind of animals and creatures that are not fit to eat.Japan and China also eat alot of disgusting things.I've always enjoyed mostly Chinese and Japanese food, sometimes Korean too,but I've never been interested in the rest of the Asian countries cuisine due to all this I just mentioned, and I think I will quit eating Chinese and Japanese soon  more

Resolved Question: What are the differences between big city and small town life?

I recently had a party, and I served some Chinese noodles and this glutinous rice thing with red bean in it. When I gave it to them, someone asked me, what's red bean? And I was just so shocked, since I thought everyone knew what red bean was. Heres my question. I recently moved from NYC, where spanish style pig feet was sold in hospital restaurants. Where everyone was accustomed to different flavors and cuisines. And here, in a small town out in the middle of nowhere, it seems like people just don't know this stuff, or aren't as willing to try it? Has anyone else noticed this?  more

Resolved Question: EU is so powerful. If East Asian(China, Taiwan, S. Korea, Japan) Union will exist, is it more powerful than EU?

Countries of East Asia. China(Future Superpower, Colorful Culture, greatest population, Has many main cities, Have many neighbors, Chinese Cuisine, Nuclear power, Many tourist, Many more I can't say. I LOVE CHINA!!!) Japan(Richest in Asian, Colorful Culture, Most High-Tech, 8th HDI(human development index) rating, Highest Life Expectancy rate, Healthiest country) South Korea(Smartest Country in the world with the IQ rating of, 106, Dramas, Korean wave, Korean Cuisine) Mongolia(Lots of Natural Resources, Fast Development, and Easy to Lead country) Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau. (Can't say anything about them but they are rich countries. But I don't know if taiwan going to join if East Asian Union will exist) Forget about North Korea. But is ts better if North Korea will become a part. What do they Have in Common? East Asian Countries Have estimated IQ score of 107-100. No country lower that 100 exept North Korea. Unlike EU that has many countries with rating of lower that 100IQ. They have good climate. They have good Exports. They have good culture and history. China and Japan are PEACE. Resolved Question: I'm 15 years of age, will I get taller?

I'm 6'1 right now, and I'm 170 pounds in the morning. I drink about 500ml-700ml of milk each day, along with a peanut butter and jelly sandwich For lunch I eat either rice with some vegetables(beans, nappa) cooked with vegetable oil and spices, dumplings or some chinese cuisine. For dinner I eat some dumplings or whatever. I RARELY eat fast food, like only on my birthday, not even when I go out with friends. Is my diet sufficient in gaining anymore height? I know i'm pretty tall already, but for my family, it's pretty short(most are above 6 feet). Oh yeah, I'm also exercising an hour a day riding my exercise bike at 32km/h, or 20mph, burning 500 calories. Well I burn 1000 calories according to the online calculator. >.> I'm saying this because I've been 6'1 for about 2-3 months and that's the time since I've started working out. And i feel like i shrunk a bit, is it possible to shrink or stunt your growth with constant exercise like what I'm doing? I'm asian btw. Thanks~ LOL 5 minutes in and I get 18 answers. Thanks guys, I'll let it go overnight and see what else there is. :) OH YEAH. i'm a guy. :o  more

Resolved Question: What is a traditional chinese dish that I can bring in to my diversity class without it being a stereotype?

I have done research around my town and one thing I was really surprised to find out, is that most of the chinese food places around here are not owned by chinese people. As a matter of fact, my favorite restaurant is owned by this really nice Korean woman. Also, I have done research that what "Americans" believe is chinese food is not. What can I bring? I realize that China is a huge country and that different regions favor different cuisines. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance  more

Resolved Question: Does this pt in this ch i wrote sound ok? needs rewriting? not long....?

does it need rewriting? wat can i fix? im only in 7th grade so thts why it not perfect. btw, keely can c ghosts if tht wasnt obvious :). and tammy is a ghost. ok thanks :) Chapter 8 Dinner at the Aldsworth household was top priority. Especially since my mom worked so hard on making a pleasant and tasty banquet and missing it was not an option. You were either sitting at the table sinking your teeth into the tasty garlic bread or not there, losing the opportunity to fill your stomach with succulent cuisines. Even if you had to work overtime or finish some last minute homework- my mom wouldn’t take any excuses. Its strange because back in Phoenix, we would order pizza every night but ever since my mom fell in love, she put all her effort into making us fancy meals. As everyone took a seat, my mom set down the tasty bowl of pasta. My two brothers smelled the flavorsome garlic and hovered over the food. “Boys, can you at least wait until I set the forks down!” my mom yelled causing Josh and Tommy to immediately lean back from the sudden outburst. For some reason, my mom was anxious about us kids’ social scene. She was like “Brad, how’s school? Any parties? And how about you, Keels? Make any new friends?” Josh , who was stirring his smoothie with his straw- apparently the three bowls of pasta and the whole basket of garlic bread he inhaled wasn’t filling enough- went “Yeah, I would, if I wasn’t so busy with my job. This, however, was news to me so I asked “You have a job?” “He works at Lin’s Chinese Buffet.” Tommy said. Josh was perfectly capable of answering himself but Tommy was searching for any possible way to inform us. Suddenly, a loud sound was heard from upstairs. Tommy flung out of his chair from the impulsive noise and bounded up the stairs, probably to prevent a sudden explosion from some type of experiment he was conducting. I swear he muttered “Oh shit.” but that’s so unlike him. There was a long pause, and then Paul said “He delivers for them. Brings home a bucket load of tips.” “Im saving up,” Josh said wiping his shirt with the sleeve of his sweatshirt, “For a new cell phone.” “Huh.” I said. “Hey, after I finished my job, I rented The Strangers. I heard its pretty scary.” Josh said. “I’ll pass.” My mom and Paul both said and headed up the stairs leaving me the only one in the room. “Im so in” I said. Passing on a horror flick wasn’t a possibility for me, especially since the commercials of it looked pretty gruesome. Josh collapsed on the couch while I pressed play on the clicker After we watched for a few minutes, burning our eyes with the graphic scenes, Josh-to my great surprise-screamed several times like a girl. I finally managed to calm myself down, but then noticed a shadow standing behind the table from the corner of my eye which made me even more tense. I slowly turned my head, prepared for whatever it was, and realized it was Tammy. What a relief, right? Wrong. That perky smile she usually wears was gone, and in its place was an unpleasant frown. Her jaw was stiff and her eyes were fixed on my brother. The defiant look on her face was intimidating, even for a little girl and I knew she was up to no good. I was not basing this assumption by the glare in her eyes. Oh, no. See, I knew she was staring at someone and the only person in the room with me was Josh. The logical explanation was that he was the victim for whatever reason. I followed the direction of her gaze and it wasn’t exactly Josh that she was staring at. It was actually the fork that someone thoughtlessly left on the table. And as I stood there, I saw her hand slowly reach for the fork. In a blink of an eye, she was behind my brother holding the fork directly above his head. I acted without thinking and flew myself at her. We both went flying. Josh didn’t notice until he heard a loud, thump causing his head to snap in my direction. Tammy disappeared leaving nothing but empty air under me. “I uh…tripped.” I said hiding the fork behind my back. “Whatever. Pop up some popcorn, will you?” he said. I nodded and headed to the kitchen. I wondered, as I stood there waiting for the popcorn to pop, what was Tammy’s problem. I know Josh is a jerk, but what could he have possibly done to her to make her that upset? He can’t even see her or talk to her, so whatever comment he said that was insulting wasn’t intentional. As I heard each pop in the microwave, the smell of butter drifted around the kitchen. I opened the microwave and filled a bowl with popcorn. As I was about to leave the room, Tammy appeared in front of me. “Tammy,” I said, “What was that about?” “Don’t ever,” she said resentfully, “Interfere.” A phone sang a harmony of ringing. Tammy gave me a bitter look and disappeared inexplicably. I had a feeling that that wasn’t the last time I’ll see her. I knew she was going to be back, and it wasn’t just to say “Hi”. She was practically glowing with determination and she wouldn’t give up so easily. “Hello?” I answered. “Hey, its Pierce.” he said. “Oh, what’s up?” “Well, I have this football game and I was wondering if you wanted to come and see me play.” he said. What if Tammy does it again? Only worse!, I thought. Everything in my mind was vague, and was difficult searching for a definite response. All the answers in my head were unreliable to trust and I desperately wanted someone else’s reassurance but there was no one to ask. “Keely, you still there?” he asked. “Yeah, I can go.” “Cool.” he said and hanged up.  more

Resolved Question: Am I allergic to Chinese? ?

Every time I eat Chinese (and it has only happened less than 5 times in my life-all in the last 2 years) I get a bad stomach and sickness, ending up vomit. My husband says it's all in my mind (psychological, from the first time I had it), and there is nothing wrong with me. I don't think so. The point is that every time I have had Chinese I had different things, so I am wondering... Could I be allergic to the oil they use, the starters or the combination of tastes in general? I am used to the Mediterranean and English cuisine, by the way, so, could it be that Chinese is not for me, as it is far different to the food I normally eat?  more

Voting Question: I would like to have more direction in my life and studies?

I like to work with aspirations. But my dreams and the chances in reality get confused. I don't know what career to go down, but time is running short. I really would like to start thinking about it, I am doing my GCSEs now. I'll sum up myself.... I am not overly sporty, I am more into netball, horse-riding and ski-ing than athletics or football. I wouldn't take it above hobby level. I am not taking music, but I do play three instruments and sing. Again, I do it more for recreation. I enjoy cooking and art, but more for my own enjoyment than anything else. I was pretty decent at woodwork, and other technology such as graphics. I was not brilliant at textiles or electronics. I don't think I would like to do these beyond school. I take two languages, (French and German). I wish I could learn the classics, but my school does not teach them, they only teach Modern Foreign Languages, such as spoken European languaes, Arabic and Mandarin Chinese. I passionate about drama and the theatre. I would love to take it more seriously, but I know how slim the chances are. I hated geography for the majority of my childhood. I was not even bad at it, but I found physical geography a little boring, and mapwork difficult. I liked studying the people aspects, but that was limited. I dropped it last year. I find History interesting on the whole, but my GCSE Course on International Relations in addition to my teacher are making it very dull. I am not the worst at Mathematics, but I do not have a logic brain. I am more of the creative type, and I like artsy things. I used to be good at Science, but my school does not teach it very well, and soon it was off my brain. I don't think anything will influence a new spark again. My confidence got knocked in Science and Maths, because I have very clever family members. English? I used to be completely worshipped over my narrative pieces, my enthusiasm on literature, my natural analysises and my perfect punctuation. At 13, this melted away. I don't ''get on'' with my teacher, my marks are average, and I seem to be reading the same books over and over again. I have 'writers block' 24/7. I also enjoy knitting, photography, reading, exploring the countryside, travelling, fashion, animals and trying out new cuisine. I am a dreamy sort of person, spontaneous, sometimes reckless, perfectionistic at times, and I like coming up with ideas best of all. Does anyone know what sort of career path would suit me? Please don't give me a random website...I would prefer a personal response. Thank you SO much! xox I totally get you Becky. When I hear words, I feel them, I taste them, I see them, they make music. They make me become someone else. And I can't just tell someone how it is with mere explanations. I've always worried that I was...that I was, mad. You make so much sense Earthchild. I am not going to spend my whole life living for the future. I am going to get a balance! After all, what does it matter what I exactly do then when there is already so much to do now and the could change everything that I ever do or want to do.  more

Resolved Question: Should I CUT THE FAT before stewing this meat?

I am s-l-o-w cooking a stew for supper, tonight. I have cut my 2 pound, boneless roast into large (2-inch) chunks and then added a bag of frozen (Food-club) frozen stew veggies to this. Cooking this all day long in my roasting pan in 3 inches of water, I recall something(??) about cutting off the beef fat from the meat vs. leaving it on. If I leave the (1/8 inch thick - in sections) fat, should I expect this to add some FLAVOR to my stew, or should I simply cut it off and add some dry seasonings? Should I even bother to be so *picky* w. eating this beef fat? I normally eat a Chinese cuisine (fish, shrimp & veggies.)  more

Resolved Question: What are your thought on Indian food?

My fiance took me to an expensive Indian restaurant this weekend for their lunch buffet. I tried just about everything and I didn't like any of it. I usually love foreign foods like Chinese, Japanese, Mexican, Italian, etc. but for some reason I hated the Indian cuisine. Maybe I tried the wrong things. I had some yellow mushy stuff that looked like there was corn in it. It was bad. Then I had curried chicken and it tasted like chicken broth. It was plain. Then i had this bright red chicken that looked barbecued but it was flavorless. I also had saffron rice and it tasted like chicken broth. Almost everything I tried tasted like chicken broth. Even dessert was gross. I tried the rice pudding and the sweet carrots. Was there something I should have tried that would have been better or do i just not have a taste for Indian food?  more
